How to type Rohingya on Android

Step-by-step guide to typing Rohingya on Android phones — Hanifi, Fonna, and Rohingyalish methods for all major Android versions.

Typing Rohingya on Android

Android’s open system makes it more flexible than iPhone for installing custom keyboards and fonts. Here’s how to type in all three Rohingya scripts.

Option 1: Rohingyalish (no setup needed)

Type Rohingyalish using any standard Latin keyboard — Gboard, SwiftKey, Samsung keyboard, or any other. No setup required.

Option 2: Arabic/Fonna script

  1. Open Gboard on your Android device
  2. Go to Gboard Settings → Languages → Add Keyboard
  3. Select Arabic
  4. Enable and activate the Arabic keyboard

When you want to switch to Arabic/Fonna while typing, tap the globe icon or space bar to toggle keyboards.

Using Samsung Keyboard

  1. Open Settings → General Management → Samsung Keyboard Settings
  2. Tap Languages and Types → Manage Input Languages
  3. Enable Arabic

Option 3: Hanifi Rohingya script

Method A: Online keyboard (all Android devices)

Visit RohingyaLanguage.org/tools/rohingya-keyboard/ in Chrome on your Android device. Type using the on-screen Hanifi keyboard and copy to any app.

Method B: Install a Rohingya keyboard APK

Some community-developed keyboard apps for Rohingya are available as APK files. Check our keyboards resource page for verified downloads.

To install an APK:

  1. Enable Install from unknown sources in Settings → Security
  2. Download the APK
  3. Open the file to install
  4. Go to Settings → System → Language & Input → Virtual Keyboard → Manage Keyboards
  5. Enable the Rohingya keyboard

Method C: Gboard custom layout

Advanced users can create a custom Gboard layout for Hanifi input using Gboard’s layout editor (available in developer options).

Displaying Hanifi on Android

Android 10 and later includes Noto fonts with Hanifi Rohingya support. On older devices:

  1. Go to Settings → Display → Font → Download fonts
  2. Search for Noto Sans fonts, or
  3. Install a font manager app and add a Hanifi-compatible font manually

WhatsApp and messaging

For WhatsApp on Android:

  • Switch keyboard using the keyboard icon in the notification bar or the globe icon
  • Paste Hanifi text copied from our online keyboard
  • Rohingyalish works with any Latin keyboard directly
