Why Rohingya fonts matter
Without the right font, Rohingya text — especially in Hanifi script — displays as empty boxes or question marks. Choosing the right font is essential for anyone producing Rohingya documents, websites, or printed materials.
Fonts for Hanifi Rohingya
Noto Sans Hanifi Rohingya
Recommended for most users.
Google’s Noto project aims to support every language in Unicode. Noto Sans Hanifi Rohingya is:
- Free and open source (OFL licence)
- Included in Android 10+ and some Linux distributions
- Available for download from Google Fonts
- Well-tested for screen and print use
Scheherazade New (partial support)
Primarily an Arabic font, but some Rohingya texts encoded in Arabic Unicode ranges display well in Scheherazade New. Not a dedicated Rohingya font.
Community-developed fonts
Several Rohingya community organisations have developed custom fonts for Hanifi. These may include additional calligraphic styles suited to printed materials. See our fonts download page for a curated list.
Fonts for Arabic/Fonna script
Any high-quality Arabic font will render the base Fonna script. Recommended options:
- Amiri — classical Arabic typeface, well-suited to religious text
- Noto Naskh Arabic — Google’s Arabic Noto font, clear and readable
- Scheherazade New — SIL International’s Arabic font with extensive diacritic support
Fonts for Rohingyalish (Latin)
Since Rohingyalish uses standard Latin letters, any Latin font works. For best readability:
- Noto Sans or Noto Serif for digital use
- Source Sans Pro for clean, modern documents
- Any system font (Arial, Georgia, Times New Roman) will display Rohingyalish correctly
